چکیده

In this paper, we introduce a method for recovering an illumination distribution of a scene from image brightness inside shadows cast by an object of known shape in the scene. In a natural illumination condition, a scene includes both direct and indirect illumination distributed in a complex way, and it is often difficult to recover an illumination distribution from image brightness observed on an object surface. The main reason for this difficulty is that there is usually not adequate variation in the image brightness observed on the object surface to reflect the subtle characteristics of the entire illumination. In this study, we demonstrate the effectiveness of using occluding information of incoming light in estimating an illumination distribution of a scene. Shadows in a real scene are caused by the occlusion of incoming light, and thus analyzing the relationships between the image brightness and the occlusions of incoming light enables us to reliably estimate an illumination distribution of a scene even in a complex illumination environment. This study further concerns the following two issues that need to be addressed. First, the method combines the illumination analysis with an estimation of the reflectance properties of a shadow surface. This makes the method applicable to the case where reflectance properties of a surface are not known a priori and enlarges the variety of images applicable to the method. Second, we introduce an adaptive sampling framework for efficient estimation of illumination distribution. Using this framework, we are able to avoid unnecessarily dense sampling of the illumination and can estimate the entire illumination distribution more efficiently with a smaller number of sampling directions of the illumination distribution. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we have successfully tested the proposed method by using sets of real images taken in natural illumination conditions with different surface materials of shadow regions. Stability Issues in Recovering Illumination Distribution from Brightness in Shadows

This paper describes a robust method for estimating, in a reliable manner, the illumination distribution of a real scene from shadows in a given image. In general, shadows in a scene are caused by the occlusion of incoming light; image brightness inside shadows have a great potential for providing distinct clues to the illumination distribution of the scene. Taking advantage of this fact, we re...

Illumination effects in face recognition

How do observers recognize faces despite dramatic image variations that arise from changes in illumination? This paper examines 1) whether face recognition is sensitive to illumination direction, and 2) whether cast shadows improve performance by providing information about illumination, or hinder performance by introducing spurious edges. In Experiment 1, observers judged whether 2 sequentiall...

Illumination Distribution from Brightness in Shadows: Adaptive Estimation of Illumination Distribution with Unknown Reflectance Properties in Shadow Regions

This paper describes a new method for estimating the illumination distribution of a real scene from a radiance distribution inside shadows cast by an object in the scene. First, the illumination distribution of the scene is approximated by discrete sampling of an extended light source. Then the illumination distribution of the scene is estimated from a radiance distribution inside shadows cast ...

Fast Shadow Removal Using Adaptive Multi-Scale Illumination Transfer

In this paper, we present a new method for removing shadows from images. First, shadows are detected by interactive brushing assisted with a Gaussian Mixture Model. Second, the detected shadows are removed using an adaptive illumination transfer approach that accounts for the reflectance variation of the image texture. The contrast and noise levels of the result are then improved with a multi-s...

Self Shadows and Cast Shadows in Estimating Illumination Distribution

This paper compares two methods for estimating illumination distributions from shadows: methods using self shadows and cast shadows. The cast shadow method provides an effective framework for recovering illuminations in a real scene utilizing variations of image brightnesses inside shadows cast by an occluding object of known shape. The shadow surface is typically the same plane on which the ob...
